Traditional Chinese Medicine and Martial Arts

Qi Gong

There are several forms of Qi Gong taught in conjunction with martial arts and Chinese medicine.  The two main forms are taken from the Chinese internal martial arts of Ba Gua Zhang and Xing Yi Quan.

Tien Kan means “Heavenly Pole” or “Heavenly Stem.”  In the human body, the “heavenly pole” is the spine.  The spine connects what is above – the head (Heaven) and what is below – the sacrum (Earth).  The heavenly pole creates a relationship between heaven and earth.

Tien Kan exercises enhance the health of the spine.  Gentle, rhythmic movements are used to mobilize the vertebral segments of the spine.  The movements stretch the ligaments, tendons and muscles of the spine.  They nourish and hydrate the vertebral disks contributing to the health of the spine.  It improves the musculoskeletal system and posture, as well as the functioning of the internal organs.

Wang Ji Wu's Nei Gong is a set of preparatory exercises designed to realign the muscle groups, ligaments, and tendons for martial arts training.  It is therefore an excellent method for rehabilitating the body after injury.  It also includes standing meditation exercises that teach the proper postural alignments for issuing martial arts power.
There are in addition other forms of Qi Gong taught at the clinic for specific types of injury and illness.  These are forms of medicinal Qi Gong and are not primarily related to martial arts practice.
